Frequently Asked Questions
How does laser therapy work?
Laser therapy works in a number of ways;
- Accelerates healing by increasing cellular energy production.
- Protects cells from damage by reducing free radical activity.
- Reduces pain by blocking the nerves that send pain signals to the brain.
- Stimulates tissue repair and healing by increasing blood flow to an injury.
- Reduces inflammation by regulating immune system activity.
What kind of laser equipment do you use?
At Ultima Healthcare we use the most technologically advanced, state-of-the-art, medical grade laser therapy equipment.
Our laser system is a class 3B that can emit red and infra-red wavelengths of light in the 655 nm, 785 nm, 810 nm and 904 nm spectrum.
These wavelengths have been extensively researched in clinical trials and have been shown to have the greatest therapeutic effect for promoting tissue repair, reducing inflammation and relieving pain.
What conditions can laser therapy be used for?
Laser therapy has been shown to be of benefit in a wide range of conditions, particularly those affecting the musculoskeletal system. Over 500 randomized clinical trials and thousands of review papers have been published in scientific journals in the management of conditions such as:
- Neck and back pain
- Post-surgical wound healing
- Frozen shoulder
- Scar tissue
- Peripheral neuropathy
- Musculoskeletal pain
- Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain
- Plantar fasciitis
What happens during a treatment?
During the initial consultation, a thorough case history and comprehensive physical assessment of your presenting complaint is undertaken. Thermal images are also taken to identify the areas of dysfunction. The laser device will then be placed over the painful or injured areas for 30 – 60 seconds per point. Typically an average of 10 – 15 points are treated per session. A set of safety glasses will be provided to ensure your eyes are protected during the treatment. A follow up treatment is generally recommended within 3 days of the initial consultation to maintain optimal healing and regeneration.
What will I feel during a treatment?
You will not typically feel anything during a laser treatment, however some patients report they feel a warm or slight tingling sensation over the areas where the laser is being applied.
Physiokey (SCENAR) therapy is regularly used in combination with laser to enhance the healing and pain relieving effects. Physiokey is a form of biofeedback and produces a pleasant tingling / soothing sensation over the painful area.
Is it safe? Are there any side effects?
Laser therapy has been used to treat patients across the world for more than 30 years. During this time there have been no reports of serious adverse effects in any of the scientific literature. Laser therapy does not cause pain, discomfort, burning, cutting or damage to tissue.
Some patients may experience a very mild warming or tingling sensation during treatment. In the 12-24 hour period after a treatment, some patients may feel tired, thirsty or notice that their pain has become more noticeable. These are normal and expected responses, indicating that the body is healing and typically resolves within 24 hours.
How long does a consultation take?
Initial consultations take 60 minutes, which includes a thorough case history and physical assessment, thermal imaging and treatment with laser and physiokey therapy.
Follow up consultations take 30 minutes and include thermal imaging, laser therapy treatment and physiokey therapy.
Whole body light pod sessions take approximately 15 minutes.
How many treatments will I need?
During the initial consultation, your practitioner will develop an individualised treatment plan to suit your specific needs and optimize recovery. As a general rule, a minimum course of 6 treatments (2 treatments per week for 3 weeks) is recommended for acute conditions. For chronic conditions a minimum of 12 treatments (2 treatments per week for 6 weeks) is recommended.
